About this project

Project description

The Ugandan Biochar Alliance is currently the largest biochar producer in Uganda. Production started in October 2026 through strategic project partnerships with local agribusinesses. The initiative targets an initial 1,000 tCO₂ removals and is designed to scale to 5,000 tCO₂ within three years.

Biochar is produced by pyrolysing agricultural residues - primarily bamboo, maize, sugarcane and tea - that would otherwise decay or be burned. The resulting char is a stable form of carbon that, when applied to soils, locks carbon away for centuries while improving soil fertility and water retention.

The project combines two revenue streams: carbon removal credits through certification under Verra and the sale of biochar as a soil amendment. Investments from €300,000 enable participation in a removals project that creates rural jobs and supports sustainable agriculture in East Africa.
